Joint effort student-led arctic research
Kelvin High School, Elmwood High School and Nelson McIntyre Collegiate have joined forces for Arctic Research!
ISAMR (pronounced isomer) stands for International Student-led Arctic Monitoring and Research.
Students from Kelvin High School will have the opportunity to participate in a fall trip to Churchill. The goal of each trip is to learn about climate change and sustainability through a hands-on scientific research study.
The students on the trip will study the identification of polar bears using whisker spot patterns with Dr. Jane Waterman from the University of Manitoba. Students will spend a couple of days on a tundra buggy with Dr. Waterman. These students will then have the opportunity to continue working with Dr. Waterman in the analysis of the data during the following months.
Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the many cultures around Churchill. They will hear a Sayisi Dené woman talk about the relocation of her people in the 1950s. They will also have the opportunity to visit the Eskimo museum and hear a presentation from the Parks Canada staff.
